Queen For A Day
During the 1950s and 60s, Queen for a Day was one of the most popular television programs, watched by millions of viewers five days a week. Queen for a Day was a precursor to today’s reality TV phenomenon. Hollywoodlaundromat is currently developing a modern day version of Queen for a Day after acquiring the program from the family of the original producer.

Queen for a Day first aired as a radio program in 1945 before being picked up for television in 1947. It aired nationally on both NBC (1956-1960) and ABC (1960-1964).

On each episode, women revealed their most personal struggles to the American public. The contestant with the most heart-wrenching story, as determined by a live studio audience, was crowned Queen for a Day. This winner was adorned with gifts and prizes provided by the many show sponsors. Similar to today’s reality TV programs, the show was never predictable and required a strong host (Jack Bailey) to keep the live studio audience, as well as viewers at home captivated.

Queen for a Day was the inspiration for many other televised programs, and virtually created reality television.
